Here is the week the calculator opens on: a single worker on a standard Form W-4, paid every week, in a state that takes no income tax from wages.
- Gross pay: 40 hours × $25.00 = $1,000.00
- Federal income tax: $78.08
- Social Security: 6.2% × $1,000.00 = $62.00
- Medicare: 1.45% × $1,000.00 = $14.50
- Texas income tax: $0.00
- Take-home pay: $845.42, which is 84.5% of the gross
The federal figure follows the four withholding steps explained on the paycheck calculator page. Change the state above and only the state lines change.
An overtime hour pays $37.50 at $25.00 an hour and leaves about $29.17 after tax.
The Department of Labor says the Fair Labor Standards Act requires covered, nonexempt employees to be paid at least one and one-half times their regular rate for the hours over 40 in a workweek. A workweek is a fixed period of 168 hours, seven days in a row, that can begin on any day, and hours are never averaged over two or more weeks.
A 50-hour week is therefore 40 × $25.00 + 10 × $37.50 = $1,375.00 before tax and $1,137.12 after it, which is $291.70 more than the 40-hour week.

Overtime is not taxed at a special rate. Publication 15 says overtime pay is subject to Social Security, Medicare and federal income tax withholding like any other pay. Withholding treats each paycheck as if it repeated all year, though, so a bigger paycheck is withheld at a bigger share: 9.7% of the 50-hour week goes to federal income tax, against 7.8% of the 40-hour week. Whatever was withheld too much comes back when you file.
Extra pay for weekend or night hours is a matter of agreement with your employer, not a federal rule. Some states have overtime laws of their own, and the employee gets whichever standard pays more. The planner splits at 40 hours a week; if your state counts overtime by the day, type your own overtime hours, or use the overtime calculator, which handles California's daily overtime and double time.
Five 8-hour days with a 30-minute unpaid meal pay for 37.5 hours, not 40.
Federal law does not require lunch or coffee breaks. When an employer gives a short break, usually about 5 to 20 minutes, it counts as paid time and counts toward overtime. A meal period of 30 minutes or more is not work time and is not paid, as long as you are completely relieved from duty: someone who eats at the desk and answers the phone is working and has to be paid for it.
| Shift | Paid hours | Gross pay | Against 40 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five days of 8½ hours at work, a 30-minute unpaid meal | 40 | $1,000.00 | Same |
| Five days of 8 hours at work, a 30-minute unpaid meal | 37.5 | $937.50 | -$62.50 |
| Five days of 8 hours at work, an hour unpaid | 35 | $875.00 | -$125.00 |
| Four days of 10 hours at work, a 30-minute unpaid meal | 38 | $950.00 | -$50.00 |
| Three days of 12 hours at work, a 30-minute unpaid meal | 34.5 | $862.50 | -$137.50 |
To be paid for 40 hours on five days with a 30-minute meal, a shift runs 8½ hours at work. The planner in the calculator does this sum for you: enter the days a week, the hours at work and the unpaid minutes, and it fills in the regular and overtime hours.
Seven 12-hour shifts in a row pay 44 hours at time and one-half, because each workweek is counted on its own.
Four 12-hour shifts are 48 paid hours, 8 of them overtime, and pay $1,300.00 against $1,000.00 for five 8-hour shifts. Three 12s are 36 hours and no overtime at all.
A work pattern's average week at $25.00 an hour runs from $900.00 to $1,325.00.
Five 8-hour shifts$1,000.00

Four 10-hour shifts$1,000.00

48 and 36 paid hours a week, 4 overtime on average
Seven on, seven off$1,325.00
84 and 0 paid hours a week, 22 overtime on average
A rotation that averages 42 hours still pays week by week. Seven on and seven off pays $2,650.00 in the week you work and nothing in the week off, an average of $1,325.00 a week, where 42 averaged hours would pay only $1,075.00.
| Pattern | Paid hours a week | Overtime a week | Average week |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five 8-hour shifts | 40 | 0 | $1,000.00 |
| Four 10-hour shifts | 40 | 0 | $1,000.00 |
| Three 12-hour shifts | 36 | 0 | $900.00 |
| Four 12-hour shifts | 48 | 8 | $1,300.00 |

| Seven on, seven off | 84 and 0 | 44 and 0 | $1,325.00 |
Which days make up a workweek is the employer's choice, so a rotation can split one way or another. The Department of Labor also lists exceptions for police and firefighters and for employees of hospitals and nursing homes. Enter each kind of week into the calculator to see its paycheck.
A year of 40-hour weeks at $25.00 an hour takes home about $43,962 however often you are paid.
Only the size of each paycheck changes. The calculator spreads a 40-hour week over the paycheck: 86.67 hours twice a month and 173.33 hours a month (52 weeks × 40 hours, divided by 24 and by 12).
| Paid | Gross a paycheck | Take-home a paycheck | Take-home a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every week | $1,000.00 | $845.42 | $43,962 |
| Every two weeks | $2,000.00 | $1,690.85 | $43,962 |
| Twice a month | $2,166.67 | $1,831.75 | $43,962 |
| Once a month | $4,333.33 | $3,663.50 | $43,962 |
The extra half in time and one-half is deductible up to $12,500, and the Form W-4 lets you collect it in each paycheck.
For tax years 2025 through 2028, employees can deduct up to $12,500 ($25,000 if married filing jointly) of qualified overtime compensation on their return. That is the part of overtime pay above the regular rate, the “half” in time and one-half, that the Fair Labor Standards Act requires, and it applies when total income is under $150,000 ($300,000 if married filing jointly). Employers use an updated Form W-4 so the benefit arrives in each paycheck instead of at filing.
At $25.00 an hour the extra half is $12.50 an hour. Ten overtime hours a week for 52 weeks is $12.50 × 10 × 52 = $6,500 to enter on line 1b of the Step 4(b) Deductions Worksheet. Federal withholding on the 50-hour week falls from $132.69 to $108.08, and the take-home pay rises from $1,137.12 to $1,161.73.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate my paycheck from an hourly wage?
- Multiply your rate by your regular hours, add one and one-half times your rate for each overtime hour, then take out federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) and your state's tax. At $25.00 an hour, 40 hours is $1,000.00 before tax and $845.42 after it in Texas. Pick your state in the calculator for your own figure.
- How is overtime pay worked out on an hourly paycheck?
- At least one and one-half times your regular rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek, according to the Department of Labor. At $25.00 an hour, an overtime hour pays $37.50, so a 50-hour week is 40 × $25.00 + 10 × $37.50 = $1,375.00. Only covered, nonexempt employees are owed overtime.
- Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?
- No special rate applies: overtime is taxed like the rest of your pay. A bigger paycheck is withheld at a higher rate, though, because withholding treats each paycheck as if it repeated all year. The 50-hour week has 9.7% of its gross withheld for federal income tax, against 7.8% for a 40-hour week, and you keep 82.7% of it against 84.5%. Any difference is settled when you file your return.
- Are unpaid breaks taken out of my hours?
- A meal period of 30 minutes or more is not work time and is not paid when you are completely relieved from duty, so five 8-hour days with a 30-minute unpaid meal are 37.5 paid hours, $937.50 at $25.00 an hour. Short breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes are paid and count toward overtime. Enter the days, the hours at work and the unpaid minutes in the planner to get the paid hours.
- How much do I make on 12-hour shifts?
- Three 12-hour shifts a week are 36 hours and pay $900.00 at $25.00 an hour. Four are 48 hours, 8 of them overtime, and pay $1,300.00. Enter the shifts you work in the planner and the overtime is split off for you.
- Does the pay schedule change how much I take home in a year?
- Not by more than a dollar or so. A 40-hour week at $25.00 an hour takes home about $43,962 a year whether you are paid every week ($845.42), every two weeks ($1,690.85), twice a month ($1,831.75) or monthly ($3,663.50).
- Do weekends and nights pay extra?
- Not by federal law. The Department of Labor says extra pay for weekend or night work is a matter of agreement between the employer and the employee. If your pay stub shows a different rate for those hours, enter the average hourly rate across the week.
- Can I deduct my overtime pay on my taxes?
- For tax years 2025 through 2028 you can deduct up to $12,500 ($25,000 if married filing jointly) of the extra half in time and one-half when your total income is under $150,000 ($300,000 jointly). A 2026 Form W-4 lets you enter an estimate, so the benefit shows up in each paycheck. With 10 overtime hours a week at $25.00 an hour it is $6,500 and $24.61 more every week.
Turnover is cheaper to prevent than to calculate.
