The days between two dates are the end date minus the start date.

Days between = end date − start date (+ 1 if the end date counts)

Every calendar day counts: weekdays, weekends and public holidays alike. The calculator counts the start date and stops the day before the end date, which is what most people mean by the days between two dates and what a plain subtraction gives. Tick “Count the end date too” and both dates count, so the answer grows by one.

Each date is held as a whole day rather than a moment on a clock, so a daylight saving change inside the range never adds or loses a day. If you put the later date first, the calculator counts from the earlier one and says so under the answer. For the hours and minutes between two times, which do shift when the clocks change, use the time duration calculator.

Monday, March 2, 2026 to Monday, November 30, 2026 is 273 days, exactly 39 weeks.

Those are the dates the calculator opens with. In this invented example a new hire starts on Monday, March 2, 2026, and the manager books a review for Monday, November 30, 2026. The question is how long the new hire will have been in the job by then.

  • March 2 to 31, counting the 2nd: 30 days.
  • April to October in full: 30 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 30 + 31 = 214 days.
  • November 1 to 29, the days before the 30th: 29 days.
  • Total: 30 + 214 + 29 = 273 days.
  • In weeks: 273 ÷ 7 = 39 weeks exactly, because both dates are Mondays.
  • In months and days: 8 months to Monday, November 2, then 28 days, so 8 months and 28 days.

A clean 39 weeks happens only when the two dates fall on the same day of the week. Move the review to Wednesday, December 2, 2026 and the span becomes 275 days, or 39 weeks and 2 days.

Counting the end date adds one day, so check which count a rule asks for.

Counting days is counting fence panels, not fence posts. From Monday, November 2 to Friday, November 6, 2026, the subtraction 6 − 2 gives 4 days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Someone who works that whole week has worked 5 days, because the Friday counts too. Both answers are right. They answer different questions.

With the end date ticked, the worked example becomes 274 days, which is 39 weeks and 1 day, or 8 months and 29 days. Use the subtraction for how long ago something happened or how long until it does. Count both dates when every day in the range is a day of something, such as a leave period that runs from the first day off through the last. When a contract or a policy sets the count, its own wording decides.

A count in months needs a rule, because months run from 28 to 31 days.

Days are all the same length. Months are not, so “8 months” is a different number of days depending on which months it covers. The calculator counts whole months forward from the start date, keeping the day of the month, and then counts the days left over. March 2 to November 2 is 8 months, and November 2 to November 30 is 28 days.

When the start date is a day that a shorter month lacks, the month ends on that month's last day instead. January 31, 2027 to February 28, 2027 counts as one whole month, because February 2027 has 28 days. February 2028 has 29, since 2028 is a leap year, so 2028 has 366 days against 365 in 2026 and 2027.

The columns start at 20 days, so the gap between 28 and 31 shows.

That is why a deadline written in months and one written in days drift apart. Three months from Monday, March 2, 2026 is Tuesday, June 2, which is 92 days, while 90 days lands on Sunday, May 31. To find the date a given number of days or months away, use the date calculator.

Weekdays make up five of every seven days in a long count.

Every full week holds 5 weekdays and 2 weekend days. The 273 days of the example are 39 full weeks, so they hold 39 × 5 = 195 weekdays and 39 × 2 = 78 weekend days. Over a short span the share swings with the starting day. Friday to the next Monday is 3 days with only 1 weekday in it, which is why the calculator counts the weekdays day by day instead of multiplying.

Each strip is one week, Monday to Sunday. The span starts on a Monday and is exactly 39 weeks long.

Weekdays are not the same as working days. The same span holds seven US federal holidays on weekdays, from Memorial Day on May 25 to Thanksgiving on November 26, which leaves 188 business days. The link under the result opens the business days calculator with the same dates, and the PTO accrual calculator turns a stretch of employment into the paid time off it has earned.

Workplace deadlines are written in days, weeks or months, and each needs its own count.

Three federal rules show how differently a period can be written, and why the day count is worth checking against the wording.

  • Discrimination charges. The EEOC says a charge generally has to be filed within 180 calendar days of the discrimination, or 300 calendar days where a state or local agency enforces a law against the same kind of discrimination. It adds that “Holidays and weekends are included in the calculation,” and that a deadline on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day. In an invented case that started on Monday, March 2, 2026, 91 days have passed by Monday, June 1, which leaves 89 of the 180.
  • Family and medical leave. To be eligible, an employee needs at least 12 months with the employer, and 29 CFR 825.110 says those months “need not be consecutive months.” The leave itself is up to 12 workweeks in a 12-month period under 29 CFR 825.200, which is 84 calendar days when it is taken in one block.
  • Layoff notice. 20 CFR 639.2 requires employers planning a plant closing or a mass layoff to give at least 60 days' notice. Notice given on Monday, March 2, 2026 reaches 60 days on Friday, May 1, 2026. The WARN notice tracker follows the notices employers file in the states that publish them.

For the hours in a shift rather than the days in a period, the hours calculator takes the start and end time, and the time zone converter lines up a deadline for colleagues in other states.

A count of days since someone joined says nothing about how long they will stay.

A day count tells you exactly how long someone has been in the job. It cannot tell you whether they are already planning their last day. By the time a resignation arrives, the decision behind it was made weeks earlier. TeamPredict works on the part before that, reading public LinkedIn signals to flag resignation risk early, so the first sign of a departure is a warning while there is still time to talk, rather than a notice period already counting down.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are between two dates?
Subtract the start date from the end date. From Monday, March 2 to Monday, November 30, 2026 that is 273 days: 30 days left in March counting the 2nd, then 30, 31, 30, 31, 31, 30 and 31 for April to October, and 29 days of November before the 30th. 273 days is exactly 39 weeks.
Does a day count include the start and end date?
The usual count includes one of them, not both: the end date minus the start date. Monday, November 2 to Friday, November 6, 2026 is 4 days that way. If both dates count, as they do for many leave and notice periods, add one, which makes it 5. The calculator's box for the end date switches between the two.
How many days are in a year?
365, or 366 in a leap year, when February has 29 days instead of 28. 2026 and 2027 have 365 days and 2028 has 366. A span of one year from the same date to the same date a year later is 365 or 366 days, depending on whether a February 29 falls inside it.
How do I count the days until a date?
Put today in the start date with the Today button, put the date you are counting to in the end date, and leave the end date box unticked. The answer is the number of days still to go, counting today and not the day itself. Tick the box if the day itself should count.
How many weekdays are between two dates?
About five of every seven days. Each full week holds 5 weekdays, so the 39 weeks from Monday, March 2 to Sunday, November 29, 2026 hold 195 of them and 78 weekend days. Partial weeks depend on where they fall, which is why the calculator counts them. For weekdays without public holidays, use the business days calculator.
