What is a WARN notice?

A WARN notice is the written warning the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires certain employers to give before a plant closing or mass layoff, generally 60 days in advance. It goes to affected workers, to the state's dislocated worker unit, and to the local government, and states publish the filings they receive.

Which employers have to file one?

The federal threshold is employers with 100 or more employees, triggered by a plant closing affecting 50 or more workers at a site or a mass layoff affecting 500 workers, or 50 to 499 workers where they make up at least a third of the site's staff. Several states set lower thresholds of their own, which is why small filings appear in some states and not others.
