An age is the number of birthdays you have had, plus the months and days since the last one.

Age = whole years since the last birthday + months and days since that birthday

A person turns a year older on the birthday, not the day before it, so a birth date of Mar 14, 1990 is 36 years old on Mar 14, 2026 and stays 36 until the day before the next March 14. The months and days after the last birthday are counted the way the date calculator moves a month: the day number stays, and a month that is too short uses its last day instead.

A birth date of Mar 14, 1990 gives 36 years, 7 months, 19 days on Monday, November 2, 2026.

Take an invented birth date of Mar 14, 1990, measured on Monday, November 2, 2026. Type the birth date and set the Age on this date box to that day.

• Years: 2026 minus 1990 is 36, and the birthday on Mar 14, 2026 has already happened, so the age is 36 years.
• Months: from Mar 14, 2026 to October 14, 2026 is 7 months.
• Days: from October 14 to November 2 is 19 days, which makes the age 36 years, 7 months, 19 days.
• The next birthday is Mar 14, 2027, when the age becomes 37, and it is 132 days away.

From the other side: 36 years of birthdays, then 233 days since the last one, and 132 days still to go before the next.

The same age counted in months, weeks, days and hours is a bigger number each time.

13,382 days is the whole span from Mar 14, 1990 to Nov 2, 2026, with the birth date itself not counted. Everything else follows from it.

• Months: 36 × 12 + 7 = 439 months.
• Weeks: 13,382 days ÷ 7 = 1,911 weeks and 5 days left over.
• Hours: 13,382 days × 24 = 321,168 hours.

Leaving the day out gives two ages, because a birth year or a birth month can fit more than one person.

On Monday, November 2, 2026, someone born in 1990 is 35 or 36 years old: 36 if the birthday has passed this year and 35 if it is still to come. The bar below shows why. Birthdays on the dark part of 2026 have happened, and birthdays on the light part have not.

Add a birth month and the pair narrows. Every March birthday had passed by November 2, so someone born in March 1990 is 36 years old. The page for people born in 1990 shows the age for each birth month, and the calculator does the same for your own year when you leave the day empty.

A birthday on February 29 is counted on February 28 in the years that have no February 29.

A person born on Feb 29, 2000 has a real birthday only every fourth year. This calculator counts the birthday on February 28 in the three years in between, so the age steps up on that day: age 1 on Feb 28, 2001, and age 4 on Feb 29, 2004, the next leap day.

Every birth year from 1930 to 2025 has its own page with the age for this year.

Each page answers the question people type into a search box, such as how old a person born in 1987 is this year, and shows the age for every birth month. The year changes by itself on January 1.

Three ages show up in US federal rules: 40, 62 and 65.

• Age 40. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act covers people age 40 or older, according to the EEOC.
• Age 62. The Social Security Administration gives 62 as the earliest age retirement benefits can start.
• Age 65. Medicare.gov describes Medicare as health insurance for people 65 or older who meet its citizenship or residency requirements.

Full retirement age depends on the birth year: the SSA table gives 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later and a lower age for earlier years, which each birth year page lists.

A birthday is a date you can plan for, and a resignation usually is not.
