## Utah withholds 4.45% of pay, less a small base allowance that fades out as pay rises.

Publication 14 gives employers seven lines. They take 4.45% of the paycheck, then subtract a base allowance ($19 biweekly for a single employee, $37 for a married one) that shrinks by 1.3% of pay above a threshold. These are the schedules the Commission published for pay periods beginning on or after June 1, 2026, and the calculator uses them for every paycheck of the year. Once the allowance has faded out, at about $1,784 a paycheck for a single employee, the tax is simply 4.45% of the whole paycheck.

## A $60,000 Utah salary takes home $1,835.07 every two weeks.

The calculator opens on this case: a single employee on a standard Form W-4, paid every two weeks, with no pre-tax deductions. Each line of Schedule 2 is carried to the whole dollar, as in the publication's own examples.

- Gross pay: $60,000 ÷ 26 = $2,307.69
- Federal income tax: $193.08
- Utah income tax: $2,307.69 × 4.45% = $103; 1.3% × ($2,307.69 − $360) = $25, which is more than the $19 base allowance, so the allowance is $0; $103 − $0 = $103
- Social Security: 6.2% × $2,307.69 = $143.08; Medicare: 1.45% = $33.46
- Take-home pay: $1,835.07 a paycheck, $47,711.88 a year

A single employee on a $60,000 salary, paid every two weeks. Invented example. Each tax is rounded to the cent in every paycheck, as payroll does.

## The allowance matters only at low pay, where a $20,000 salary has $520 withheld instead of 4.45%.

For a year, the single allowance is $468 and starts to shrink above $9,360 of pay, so at low pay it takes a visible bite out of the 4.45%. By the time pay passes the point where it is gone, the share of pay withheld is the full rate.

_Figure: Bar chart of the Utah income tax withheld in a year as a share of pay, single, paid every two weeks: $20,000: 2.60% ($520); $30,000: 3.64% ($1,092); $60,000: 4.46% ($2,678); $150,000: 4.45% ($6,682)._

Invented salaries, single, paid every two weeks, no pre-tax deductions.

## A married employee has $87 withheld from this paycheck, against $103 single.

Utah takes only the filing status on the federal W-4. The Married column has an allowance of $37 instead of $19 that does not fade out until about $3,527 a paycheck. The schedules have only a Single and a Married column, and head of household uses the Single one.

_Figure: Bar chart of the Utah income tax withheld from one biweekly paycheck on a $60,000 salary: Single: $103.00; Head of household, Single column: $103.00; Married: $87.00._

Invented example: a $60,000 salary, paid every two weeks, no pre-tax deductions.

## Utah withholds on federal wages, so a 401(k) lowers the tax.

Publication 14 says Utah calculates withholding on wages subject to federal withholding as the IRS defines them. A 401(k) deferral of 6% on the $60,000 example is $138.46 a paycheck, and it lowers Utah withholding by $6.00. Social Security and Medicare still apply to a 401(k) deferral, but not to health premiums or an HSA contribution made through a cafeteria plan.

_Figure: Bar chart of the tax withheld from one biweekly paycheck on a $60,000 salary, single: Federal tax, no 401(k): $193.08; Federal tax, 6% 401(k): $176.46; Utah tax, no 401(k): $103.00; Utah tax, 6% 401(k): $97.00._

Invented example: a $60,000 salary, single, paid every two weeks. 6% of pay is $138.46 a paycheck.

## Hiring that employee costs $64,941 a year in Utah.

On top of the $60,000, the employer matches Social Security and Medicare at 6.2% and 1.45%, which is $4,590. It pays federal unemployment tax of 0.6% on the first $7,000, which is $42; Utah is not on the Labor Department's list of states with a 2026 credit reduction. Utah unemployment tax applies to the first $50,700 of pay, and a new employer gets its industry's average rate. At 0.61%, the state average, that is $309.27 a year per employee. The employee pays nothing toward it.

## Take-home pay in Utah runs from $32,656 on $40,000 to $107,109 on $150,000.

## Frequently asked questions

How does Utah work out the income tax taken from my paycheck?

Publication 14's withholding schedules have your employer take 4.45% of the paycheck, then subtract a small base allowance that fades out as pay rises: $19 for a single employee paid every two weeks, reduced by 1.3% of pay over $360. Every product is carried to the whole dollar. For a $60,000 salary paid every two weeks, that is $2,307.69 × 4.45% = $103, an allowance that has faded to $0, and $103 withheld.

How much is $60,000 a year after tax in Utah?

For a single employee paid every two weeks, a $60,000 salary takes home $1,835.07 a paycheck, or $47,711.88 a year. The year's taxes are $5,020.08 of federal income tax, $2,678.00 of Utah income tax, $3,720.08 of Social Security and $869.96 of Medicare.

How much is $20 an hour after tax in Utah?

At 40 hours a week and weekly pay, $20 an hour is $800.00 gross and $649.72 take-home a week for a single employee. That is $54.08 of federal income tax, $35.00 of Utah income tax, $49.60 of Social Security and $11.60 of Medicare. Switch to hourly in the calculator to type your own hours, including overtime.

Does Utah have its own withholding form or allowances?

No. Utah withholds from the federal Form W-4 and the Utah withholding schedules, and the publication says no subtraction is made for personal or other withholding allowances claimed on the federal form. The only things that matter are the filing status on the W-4, single or married, and the pay. Head of household uses the Single column.

Why does Utah withhold less from a married employee?

The Married column of the schedule has a bigger base allowance, $37 against $19 biweekly, and it fades out later, so it lasts until about $3,527 a paycheck instead of $1,784. On the $60,000 example a married employee has $87 withheld a paycheck against $103 single, whatever the spouse earns. Head of household uses the Single column: $103.

How does Utah tax a bonus?

Utah publishes no separate bonus method: a bonus is wages and goes through the same withholding schedules. This calculator treats all pay as regular pay, and the bonus tax calculator works out the bonus case.

What if I live in another state but work in Utah?

An employer does not withhold Utah tax from a nonresident who has no other Utah income, works in Utah for 20 days or less, and lives in a state that has no income tax or that exempts nonresidents' wages with a similar rule. The exclusion does not apply to professional athletes, professional entertainers, prominent persons paid per event, real property laborers or key employees. An active duty service member's nonresident spouse can also be exempt, by writing a note under box 4c of the federal W-4.

What does a 401(k), an HSA or a health plan do to my Utah paycheck?

Utah calculates withholding on wages subject to federal withholding, as the IRS defines them, so this calculator takes a 401(k) deferral, health premiums through a cafeteria plan and HSA contributions through one out of the pay before it applies the schedule. Putting 6% of a $60,000 salary into a 401(k) ($138.46 a paycheck) cuts Utah withholding by $6.00 and take-home pay by only $115.84. A $100 HSA contribution a paycheck cuts Utah withholding by $5.00.

Who pays unemployment tax in Utah, and how much is it?

The employer does, to the Department of Workforce Services, and nothing comes out of your paycheck for it. In 2026 the taxable wage base is $50,700 per employee. A new employer gets the average rate of its industry, which has no single figure; this calculator uses 0.61%, the state's average on taxable wages in the Labor Department's 2024 report, which is $309.27 a year per employee. Rates run from 0.1% to 7.1% in 2026. Utah is not on the Labor Department's list of states with a 2026 federal credit reduction.
