## North Carolina withholds 4.09% of your pay after a standard deduction, which is the 2026 income tax rate of 3.99% plus 0.1%.

North Carolina's income tax rate for 2026 is 3.99%, and the Department of Revenue's NC-30 adds 0.1% to it for withholding, which makes 4.09%. The percentage method takes the standard deduction ($12,750 a year, or $19,125 for a head of household) and $2,500 a year for each allowance on your NC-4 off the pay for the period, in the amounts the booklet prints for each pay period. What is left is multiplied by 4.09%.

## A $60,000 North Carolina salary takes home $1,864.07 every two weeks.

The calculator opens on this case: a single employee with 0 allowances on the NC-4 and a standard Form W-4, paid every two weeks, with no pre-tax deductions.

- Gross pay: $60,000 ÷ 26 = $2,307.69
- Federal income tax: $193.08
- North Carolina income tax: $2,307.69 less the $490.38 standard deduction for the period is $1,817.31; × 4.09% = $74.33, rounded to $74
- Social Security: 6.2% × $2,307.69 = $143.08; Medicare: 1.45% = $33.46
- Take-home pay: $1,864.07 a paycheck, $48,465.88 a year

_Figure: Bar chart for a single employee on a $60,000 salary, paid every two weeks, with 0 allowances, paid 26 times a year. Federal income tax: $5,020 · 8.4%; Social Security: $3,720 · 6.2%; Medicare: $870 · 1.4%; North Carolina income tax: $1,924 · 3.2%; Take-home pay: $48,466 · 80.8%._

A single employee on a $60,000 salary, paid every two weeks, with 0 allowances. Invented example. Each tax is rounded to the cent in every paycheck, as payroll does.

## North Carolina rounds every paycheck's withholding to a whole dollar.

NC-30 tells the employer to round the final amount to the nearest dollar, so the figures on a North Carolina pay stub never have cents. The exact 4.09% of the example is $74.33; the employer withholds $74. A single and a married employee are withheld the same $74 on this pay, because the booklet gives one table to a single person, a married person and a surviving spouse.

## A head of household has a standard deduction of $19,125, so the same pay is withheld $10 less.

The head of household table takes $735.58 off a biweekly paycheck, against $490.38 for everyone else. That is why the Form W-4 filing status matters here and a married worker's does not: the NC-4 allowances are what a married worker uses to adjust.

_Figure: Bar chart of the North Carolina income tax withheld from one biweekly paycheck on a $60,000 salary: Single, or married: $74.00; Head of household: $64.00._

Invented example: a $60,000 salary, paid every two weeks, with 0 allowances.

## Most workers claim 0 allowances on the NC-4, and each one takes about $4 off a biweekly paycheck.

An allowance is worth $2,500 of pay a year, which is $96.15 on a biweekly paycheck and about $4 of tax once the result is rounded to the dollar. The NC-4 worksheet sends most employees straight to 0. Claiming 1 on the $60,000 example lowers the withholding from $74 to $70 a paycheck.

_Figure: Bar chart of the North Carolina income tax withheld from one biweekly paycheck on a $60,000 salary, single, with 0 allowances: $74.00; 1 allowances: $70.00; 2 allowances: $66.00; 3 allowances: $63.00; 5 allowances: $55.00._

Invented example: a $60,000 salary, single, paid every two weeks. Each allowance is $2,500 of pay a year.

## A 401(k) lowers North Carolina tax, because the state starts from the federal definition of wages.

NC-30 says wages have the same meaning as in section 3401 of the Internal Revenue Code, so a 401(k) deferral is left out of the pay North Carolina taxes. Putting 6% of the $60,000 salary in ($138.46 a paycheck) lowers the withholding by $5. Health premiums and HSA contributions through a cafeteria plan come out too.

_Figure: Bar chart of the tax withheld from one biweekly paycheck on a $60,000 salary, single: Federal tax, no 401(k): $193.08; Federal tax, 6% 401(k): $176.46; North Carolina tax, no 401(k): $74.00; North Carolina tax, 6% 401(k): $69.00._

Invented example: a $60,000 salary, single, paid every two weeks. 6% of pay is $138.46 a paycheck.

## Hiring that employee costs $64,974 a year in North Carolina.

On top of the $60,000, the employer matches Social Security and Medicare at 6.2% and 1.45%, which is $4,590. It pays federal unemployment tax of 0.6% on the first $7,000, which is $42; North Carolina is not on the Labor Department's list of states with a 2026 credit reduction. A new North Carolina employer pays unemployment tax at 1% on the first $34,200 of pay, which is $342 a year per employee.

## Frequently asked questions

How does North Carolina work out the income tax taken from my paycheck?

The Department of Revenue's NC-30 for 2026 offers wage bracket tables, a percentage method and an annualized method; this calculator uses the percentage method. It takes the pay period's share of the standard deduction ($490.38 for a single worker paid every two weeks) and $96.15 for each allowance on your Form NC-4 off your pay, multiplies the rest by 4.09%, and rounds to the whole dollar. For a $60,000 salary, $2,307.69 less $490.38 is $1,817.31, and 4.09% of that is $74.33, so $74 is withheld.

How much is $60,000 a year after tax in North Carolina?

For a single employee who claims 0 allowances on the NC-4 and is paid every two weeks, a $60,000 salary takes home $1,864.07 a paycheck, or $48,465.88 a year. The year's taxes are $5,020.08 of federal income tax, $1,924.00 of North Carolina income tax, $3,720.08 of Social Security and $869.96 of Medicare.

How much is $20 an hour after tax in North Carolina?

At 40 hours a week and weekly pay, $20 an hour is $800.00 gross and $661.72 take-home a week for a single employee with 0 allowances. That is $54.08 of federal income tax, $23 of North Carolina income tax, $49.60 of Social Security and $11.60 of Medicare. Switch the calculator to hourly and type your own hours, including overtime.

Why is the North Carolina withholding always a whole number of dollars?

NC-30 says to round the final amount to the nearest whole dollar, in both the percentage method and the wage bracket tables. On the $60,000 example the exact figure is $74.33 and $74 is withheld, so the withholding can be up to 50 cents a paycheck away from the exact tax.

How many allowances should I claim on the North Carolina NC-4?

The NC-4 worksheet tells most employees to enter zero: a single worker with no deductions above the standard deduction and no tax credits stops at the first page and claims 0. Extra allowances come from the worksheet: one for each $2,500 your expected deductions exceed the standard deduction, one for each $103 of tax credits, and, for a married couple filing jointly, up to 5 when the spouse expects to earn little (a spouse with combined wages and taxable retirement benefits of $250 or less earns 5). Each allowance takes about $4 off the tax of the $60,000 example.

Does North Carolina take anything else from my paycheck besides income tax?

This calculator takes only North Carolina income tax from an employee's pay, besides the federal taxes. North Carolina unemployment insurance is an employer tax, paid on the first $34,200 of each employee's pay, so it appears in the employer's cost below and not in your take-home.

What does a 401(k), an HSA or a health plan do to my North Carolina paycheck?

For North Carolina withholding, wages have the same meaning as in section 3401 of the Internal Revenue Code, so a 401(k) deferral, health premiums through a cafeteria plan and HSA contributions through one come out before North Carolina tax, as they do federally. Putting 6% of a $60,000 salary into a 401(k) ($138.46 a paycheck) cuts North Carolina withholding by $5 and take-home pay by only $116.84.

Who pays unemployment tax in North Carolina, and how much is it?

The employer does, to the Division of Employment Security. A new North Carolina employer pays 1% in 2026 on the first $34,200 of each employee's pay, for the first two years before an experience rate takes over. At a $60,000 salary that is $342 a year per employee.
