## Nevada's constitution bars an income tax on wages.

Article 10, Section 9 reads: “No income tax shall be levied upon the wages or personal income of natural persons.” It leaves room to tax the income or revenue of a business. What is left on a Nevada pay stub is federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare, then whatever you set aside before tax.

## A $60,000 Nevada salary takes home $1,938.07 every two weeks.

The calculator opens on this case: a single employee on a standard Form W-4, paid every two weeks, with no pre-tax deductions.

- Gross pay: $60,000 ÷ 26 = $2,307.69
- Federal income tax: $193.08 ($60,000 less the $8,600 of IRS Worksheet 1A is $51,400; $1,240 plus 12% of everything over $19,900 is $5,020 a year)
- Social Security: 6.2% × $2,307.69 = $143.08; Medicare: 1.45% = $33.46
- Nevada income tax: $0.00
- Take-home pay: $1,938.07 a paycheck, $50,389.88 a year

_Figure: Bar chart for a single employee on a $60,000 salary, paid every two weeks, paid 26 times a year. Federal income tax: $5,020 · 8.4%; Social Security: $3,720 · 6.2%; Medicare: $870 · 1.4%; Nevada income tax: $0 · 0%; Take-home pay: $50,390 · 84%._

A single employee on a $60,000 salary, paid every two weeks. Invented example. Each tax is rounded to the cent in every paycheck, as payroll does.

## Nevada counts overtime by the day for lower-paid workers, after 8 hours.

NRS 608.018 requires time and one-half whenever an employee paid less than one and one-half times the state minimum wage works more than 40 hours in a scheduled week or more than 8 hours in a workday, unless the employee and employer agree on four 10-hour days. Pay at or above that line follows the weekly rule only, as in federal law. For a lower-paid worker, a single long day can therefore carry overtime that a weekly count never sees. The planner and the overtime field in this calculator split at 40 hours a week: type the overtime hours you are owed there, or start from the [overtime calculator](https://www.teampredict.ai/tools/overtime-calculator), which also does California's daily rule.

_Figure: Bar chart of one week of pay at $20.00 an hour, single, paid weekly, for 40 hours: $800.00 gross, $684.72 take-home; 46 hours: $980.00 gross, $829.35 take-home; 52 hours: $1,160.00 gross, $973.98 take-home._

Invented example at $20.00 an hour. Hours over 40 are paid at time and one-half.

## A 401(k) takes $138.46 of a paycheck and costs $121.84 of take-home pay.

With no state tax to lower, the whole saving is federal: a 6% deferral on the $60,000 example cuts federal withholding by $16.62 a paycheck. Social Security and Medicare are still taken on the full $2,307.69.

_Figure: Bar chart of the tax withheld from one biweekly paycheck on a $60,000 salary, single: Federal tax, no 401(k): $193.08; Federal tax, 6% 401(k): $176.46; Nevada tax, no 401(k): $0.00; Nevada tax, 6% 401(k): $0.00._

Invented example: a $60,000 salary, single, paid every two weeks. 6% of pay is $138.46 a paycheck.

## Hiring that employee costs $65,943 a year in Nevada.

On top of the $60,000, the employer matches Social Security and Medicare at 6.2% and 1.45%, which is $4,590. It pays federal unemployment tax of 0.6% on the first $7,000, which is $42. A new Nevada employer pays state unemployment tax at 2.95% on the first $43,700 of pay, which is $1,289.15, plus 0.05% for the Career Enhancement Program on the same pay, which is $21.85. The employer also files a Modified Business Tax return every quarter: 1.17% of wages above $50,000 a quarter for most employers, which falls on the payroll as a whole and not on one employee.

_Figure: Bar chart of the employer's taxes on an employee on a $60,000 salary: Employer Social Security $3,720; Employer Medicare $870; Nevada unemployment $1,289; Nevada Career Enhancement Program tax $22; Federal unemployment (FUTA) $42. Together $5,943, for a total cost of $65,943 a year._

An employee on a $60,000 salary. Nevada unemployment is the 2026 new-employer rate of 2.95% on the first $43,700.

## Nevada pays twice a month, owes a fired worker everything at once and pays for rest breaks.

Wages are due semimonthly: by the last day of the month for pay earned before the 16th, and by the 15th of the next month for the rest. A discharged employee is owed final pay immediately; one who quits is owed it by the next regular payday or 7 days later, whichever comes first. Rest periods of 10 minutes for each 4 hours are paid work time, and an employer may not keep someone at work for 8 continuous hours without a meal period of at least half an hour. The [hourly paycheck calculator](https://www.teampredict.ai/tools/hourly-paycheck-calculator) takes the days, the shift length and the unpaid minutes and gives the week's paid hours.

## Frequently asked questions

Does Nevada have a state income tax?

No. Article 10, Section 9 of the Nevada Constitution says no income tax shall be levied upon the wages or personal income of natural persons, though it allows taxes on the income or revenue of businesses. Nothing is withheld for the state, so your paycheck loses only federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, plus anything you choose to set aside, such as a 401(k) or health premiums.

How much is $60,000 a year after tax in Nevada?

For a single employee on a standard Form W-4 who is paid every two weeks, a $60,000 salary takes home $1,938.07 a paycheck, or $50,389.88 a year. The year's taxes are $5,020.08 of federal income tax, $3,720.08 of Social Security and $869.96 of Medicare.

How much is $20 an hour after tax in Nevada?

At 40 hours a week and weekly pay, $20 an hour is $800.00 gross and $684.72 take-home a week for a single employee with a standard Form W-4. That is $54.08 of federal income tax, $49.60 of Social Security and $11.60 of Medicare. Switch the calculator to hourly and type your own hours, including overtime.

When does Nevada require overtime?

After 40 hours in a scheduled week for everyone, and also after 8 hours in a workday for an employee paid less than one and one-half times the state minimum wage, unless the employee and employer agree to a schedule of 10 hours a day for four days. That daily rule is Nevada Revised Statutes 608.018, and it is stricter than the federal weekly rule. The calculator splits overtime at 40 hours a week, so type your own overtime hours if you work long days at a low hourly rate.

Are rest breaks paid in Nevada?

Yes. An employer must authorize and permit a rest period of 10 minutes for each 4 hours of work, or major fraction of it, and authorized rest periods count as hours worked with no deduction from wages. Employees whose daily work time is under 3.5 hours need none. A meal period of at least half an hour is required before 8 continuous hours of work, under NRS 608.019.

How often must a Nevada employer pay me?

Twice a month. NRS 608.060 makes private-sector wages due semimonthly: pay earned before the 16th is due by 8 a.m. on the last day of that month, and pay earned from the 16th on is due by 8 a.m. on the 15th of the next month. Employers may pay more often than that.

When is my last paycheck due in Nevada?

If you are fired, your wages and compensation are due immediately, and the employer is penalized only if it has not paid within 3 days after they become due. If you quit, they are due by your next regular payday or 7 days after you quit, whichever is earlier. A late employer can owe your wages at the same rate for up to 30 days, under NRS 608.040.

What does a 401(k) do to my Nevada paycheck?

It lowers take-home pay by less than you put in. Putting 6% of a $60,000 salary into a 401(k) is $138.46 a paycheck, but take-home pay falls by only $121.84, because federal income tax withholding drops by $16.62. Nevada has no income tax to lower, and Social Security and Medicare are still taken on the full pay.

Who pays unemployment tax in Nevada, and is there another payroll tax?

The employer pays both, and neither comes out of your paycheck. A new Nevada employer pays unemployment tax at 2.95% for 14 to 17 calendar quarters on the first $43,700 of each employee's pay in 2026, which is $1,289.15 a year per employee, plus 0.05% for the Career Enhancement Program on the same pay ($21.85). Nevada also charges a Modified Business Tax of 1.17% on quarterly wages above $50,000, after health benefits the employer pays. It is figured on the whole payroll and not per employee, so it is not in the employer block.
