## Michigan withholds a flat 4.25% of pay, after $5,900 for each exemption on your MI-W4.

Treasury's Form 446, the 2026 Michigan Income Tax Withholding Guide, opens with two numbers: a withholding rate of 4.25% and a personal exemption amount of $5,900. The employer takes $5,900 a year off your pay for each exemption on your Form MI-W4, multiplies what is left by 4.25%, and divides by the number of pay periods. There are no brackets, no standard deduction and no filing status: the exemptions you claim are the whole difference between two workers on the same pay.

## A $60,000 Michigan salary takes home $1,849.64 every two weeks.

The calculator opens on this case: a single employee with 1 exemption on the MI-W4 and a standard Form W-4, paid every two weeks, with no pre-tax deductions.

- Gross pay: $60,000 ÷ 26 = $2,307.69
- Federal income tax: $193.08
- Michigan income tax: ($60,000 − $5,900) × 4.25% = $2,299.25 a year, ÷ 26 = $88.43
- Social Security: 6.2% × $2,307.69 = $143.08; Medicare: 1.45% = $33.46
- Take-home pay: $1,849.64 a paycheck, $48,090.70 a year

_Figure: Bar chart for a single employee on a $60,000 salary, paid every two weeks, with 1 exemption, paid 26 times a year. Federal income tax: $5,020 · 8.4%; Social Security: $3,720 · 6.2%; Medicare: $870 · 1.4%; Michigan income tax: $2,299 · 3.8%; Take-home pay: $48,091 · 80.2%._

A single employee on a $60,000 salary, paid every two weeks, with 1 exemption. Invented example. Each tax is rounded to the cent in every paycheck, as payroll does.

## Each exemption on the MI-W4 keeps $5,900 of pay from tax, which is worth $9.65 a paycheck.

$5,900 × 4.25% is $250.75 a year, which is $9.65 on a biweekly paycheck. A second exemption saves the same again, for a spouse with no income or a dependent, until the exemptions use up the whole paycheck and nothing is withheld. The saving is the same at every pay level, because the rate is flat.

_Figure: Bar chart of the Michigan income tax withheld from one biweekly paycheck on a $60,000 salary, single, with 0 exemptions: $98.08; 1 exemptions: $88.43; 2 exemptions: $78.79; 3 exemptions: $69.14; 5 exemptions: $49.86._

Invented example: a $60,000 salary, single, paid every two weeks. Each exemption is $5,900 of pay a year.

## Michigan follows the federal rule for a 401(k), a health plan and an HSA.

Michigan withholds on compensation as the federal guidelines define it, so the amounts that skip federal income tax skip Michigan tax too. A 401(k) deferral of 6% on the $60,000 example is $138.46 a paycheck, and it lowers Michigan withholding by $5.88. Social Security and Medicare still apply to a 401(k) deferral, but not to health premiums or an HSA contribution made through a cafeteria plan.

_Figure: Bar chart of the tax withheld from one biweekly paycheck on a $60,000 salary, single: Federal tax, no 401(k): $193.08; Federal tax, 6% 401(k): $176.46; Michigan tax, no 401(k): $88.43; Michigan tax, 6% 401(k): $82.55._

Invented example: a $60,000 salary, single, paid every two weeks. 6% of pay is $138.46 a paycheck.

## Hiring that employee costs $64,875 a year in Michigan.

On top of the $60,000, the employer matches Social Security and Medicare at 6.2% and 1.45%, which is $4,590. It pays federal unemployment tax of 0.6% on the first $7,000, which is $42; Michigan is not on the Labor Department's list of states with a 2026 credit reduction. A new Michigan employer pays unemployment tax at 2.7% on the first $9,000 of pay, which is $243.00 a year per employee.

_Figure: Bar chart of the employer's taxes on an employee on a $60,000 salary: Employer Social Security $3,720; Employer Medicare $870; Michigan unemployment $243; Federal unemployment (FUTA) $42. Together $4,875, for a total cost of $64,875 a year._

## Frequently asked questions

How does Michigan work out the income tax taken from my paycheck?

Treasury's 2026 withholding guide, Form 446, sets the rate at 4.25% of pay after the personal and dependency exemption allowance, which is $5,900 for each exemption on your Form MI-W4. Your employer annualizes the pay for the period, subtracts $5,900 for each exemption, multiplies by 4.25% and divides by the pay periods. For a $60,000 salary with 1 exemption, that is $60,000 less $5,900, $54,100, times 4.25%, $2,299.25 a year, or $88.43 every two weeks. Treasury's online withholding calculator gives the same figure.

How much is $60,000 a year after tax in Michigan?

For a single employee who claims 1 exemption on the MI-W4 and is paid every two weeks, a $60,000 salary takes home $1,849.64 a paycheck, or $48,090.70 a year. The year's taxes are $5,020.08 of federal income tax, $2,299.18 of Michigan income tax, $3,720.08 of Social Security and $869.96 of Medicare.

How much is $20 an hour after tax in Michigan?

At 40 hours a week and weekly pay, $20 an hour is $800.00 gross and $655.54 take-home a week for a single employee with 1 exemption. That is $54.08 of federal income tax, $29.18 of Michigan income tax, $49.60 of Social Security and $11.60 of Medicare. Switch the calculator to hourly and type your own hours, including overtime.

What do I put on line 6 of the Michigan MI-W4?

Line 6 is the number of personal and dependent exemptions, which is you, a spouse and each dependent, no more than you could claim on your Michigan return. Each is worth $5,900 of pay a year in 2026, up from $5,800 in 2025. If your employer gets no valid MI-W4, Michigan says to withhold as if you claimed none. On the $60,000 example, 0 exemptions withhold $98.08 a paycheck against $88.43 with 1 and $78.79 with 2. Michigan has no standard deduction and no filing status in its withholding, so the federal Form W-4 cannot stand in for the MI-W4.

Does this include Detroit and other Michigan city income taxes?

No, this calculator takes only the state income tax and the federal taxes. Some Michigan cities, among them Detroit and Flint, charge their own city income tax, which the employer withholds separately. The Michigan Department of Treasury processes Detroit's individual, business and fiduciary returns, and will process Flint's from January 1, 2027. Your pay stub shows whether a city tax is taken.

How does Michigan tax a bonus?

A bonus or other payment made separately from regular pay is withheld at 4.25% of the payment, with no adjustment for exemptions. This calculator treats all pay as regular pay.

What does a 401(k), an HSA or a health plan do to my Michigan paycheck?

Form 446 says Michigan follows the federal guidelines for fringe benefits such as 401(k) deferred compensation and cafeteria plans, so a 401(k) deferral, health premiums through a cafeteria plan and HSA contributions through one all come out before Michigan tax, as they do federally. Putting 6% of a $60,000 salary into a 401(k) ($138.46 a paycheck) cuts Michigan withholding by $5.88 and take-home pay by only $115.96. A $100 HSA contribution a paycheck cuts Michigan withholding by $4.25.

Who pays unemployment tax in Michigan, and how much is it?

The employer does, to the Unemployment Insurance Agency. A new Michigan employer pays 2.7% in 2026 for its first two years on the first $9,000 of each employee's pay, except certain construction employers, which pay their industry's average rate. The $9,000 is the reduced wage base for 2026, which an employer gets by being in good standing, with every report filed and no unpaid balance of $25 or more. That is $243.00 a year per employee at a $60,000 salary.

I live in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio or Wisconsin and work in Michigan. Does Michigan withhold from me?

No, if you give your employer a signed and dated statement of your legal address in your home state. Michigan has reciprocal agreements with those six states, and a Michigan employer does not withhold Michigan income tax from their residents who work in Michigan. This calculator withholds as if the employee has no such exemption.
