# What is employee engagement?

Definition

Employee engagement is how committed and involved people are in their work and their company, beyond simply doing the tasks assigned to them.

## Engagement is commitment beyond the assigned tasks.

An engaged employee cares how the work turns out, offers ideas and helps colleagues. A disengaged one does what the role requires and stops there, which can look like [quiet quitting](https://www.teampredict.ai/glossary#quiet-quitting).

A satisfied employee is content with the pay and conditions and does the tasks assigned. That is comfort, and it is a different thing from commitment.

Engaged means invested: caring how the work turns out, offering ideas and helping colleagues. Engagement sits upstream of retention, output and referrals._

## Engagement moves before retention does.

It is the condition that sits upstream of retention, output and referrals. It is also frequently confused with satisfaction: a satisfied employee is comfortable, an engaged one is invested.

That makes it a [leading indicator](https://www.teampredict.ai/glossary#leading-indicator): engagement scores move before the turnover rate does, which gives you time to act.

_Figure: Leading indicators move before the outcome: engagement scores, absenteeism and flight risk signals. The turnover rate lags: on the timeline it moves later, so it can only confirm what already happened._

## You measure engagement with surveys and with behavior.

- [eNPS](https://www.teampredict.ai/glossary/enps): one question on whether people would recommend the company as a place to work.
- [Pulse surveys](https://www.teampredict.ai/glossary#pulse-survey): a handful of questions sent monthly or quarterly.
- A full engagement survey, usually once or twice a year.
- Behavior you already record, such as [absenteeism](https://www.teampredict.ai/glossary#absenteeism) and how many people take part in optional work.

Survey results are usually reported as the favorable share: the people who agree or strongly agree with a statement.

## Here is a worked example with round numbers.

Take an invented team of 60 asked to rate the statement "I would recommend this team as a place to work" from 1 to 5. If 45 people answer and 27 choose 4 or 5, the favorable share is 27 ÷ 45 × 100 = 60%, and the response rate is 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.

Report both. A favorable share that rises while the response rate falls can mean the unhappiest people stopped answering, which is [survey fatigue](https://www.teampredict.ai/glossary#survey-fatigue).

## Engagement is built by managers more than by programs.

The things that raise engagement are the same things that lower [flight risk](https://www.teampredict.ai/glossary/flight-risk): a manager who holds regular [one-on-ones](https://www.teampredict.ai/glossary/one-on-one), a visible path to grow, recognition for good work, fair pay and a workload that can be sustained.

Most of those sit with the direct manager, which is why it pays to read engagement team by team and not only as a company average. A company-wide program can support a good manager. It rarely makes up for a poor one.

## These are the common mistakes with employee engagement.

- Treating satisfaction and engagement as the same thing.
- Surveying often and changing nothing, which drives response rates down.
- Reading the company average and missing one disengaged team.
- Treating the score as the goal instead of the conversations it should start.
